Vanniyar, also transliterated Vanniar, are a large social group in South India. They primarily live in Tamil Nadu where they speak Tamil, while in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka they speak their native Dravidian languages namely, Telugu and Kannada respectively.

The name Vanniyar is derived from the Tamil word 'Vanmai' which means valor. Agni,the God of Fire is connected with Regal office,as kings hold in their hands the fire wheel or Agneya chakra. The Vanniyars of South India considered as a representative of the Non-Aryan,a Dravidian Rajput Element. In Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka Vanniars while referring their caste in circumstances and rituals, subtitle with the phrase 'Agnivanshi' denoting their clan.
At Sirkazhi Vaideeswaran Temple Inscriptions about Vanniyar Puranam are seen. It denotes that,at ancient times there is two asuras known as Vatapi and Mahi, worshipped Brahma and obtained immunity from Death and subsequently they garrisoned the Earth. Jambuva Mahamuni,performed a Yagam,or sacrifice by power.soon Armed Horse men sprung from the flames,undertook twelve expeditions against them and destroyed them. Their leader then assumed the government of the country under the name Rudra Vanniya Maharaja,who had five sons,the Ancestors of Vanniya Caste. This Tradition alludes to the destruction of the city of Vatapi by Narasimhavarman,the king of Pallis or Pallavas.
In the Classical tamil poem Kalladam,which has been attributed to the time of Thiruvalluvar,the author of the sacred Kural,Vanni is used in the sense of King. Kamban, the author of Tamil Ramayana,uses it in a similar sense.
The vanniyans of agnikula race, can be classified as Ruthra Vanniyar, Agni Vanniyar, Sambu vanniyar, Brahma vanniyar, and Indra Vanniyar.

The Titles," Indicating Authority,Bravery and Superiority," assumed by them are Nayakar,Varma,Padaiyachi (Head of an Army), Kandar, Chera, Chola, Pandya, Sambuvarays, Kadavarayas, Kalingarayas, Mazhavarayas, Samattiyars, Udaiyars, Kondiyars, Nainars, Sozhaganars, Munaiarayas and Kachirayas,Goundan and Kavandan. Some say that they belong to Chola race,and that, as such, they should be called as Chembians. They also bear the Sozhaganars title indicating their chola origin.
The Zamindars of Pichavaram, UdayarPalayam, Ariyalur, M Parur, Thiruvidaichuram, Manimangalam and Sivagiri are all Vanniya By Caste.
In North East Sri Lanka,Triconamalee are ruled by Vanniyans and Vanniyachi's.
A well known verse of Irattayar in praise of Kanchipuram Ekambaranathaswmi refers to the Pallava King as being of the Sambu Race. The latter Descendants of the Pallava apparently tookc Sambuvarayar and Kadavarayar Titles.

The Vanniyars were known as Vanniakula Kshatriyas and Padayatchis. Depending upon the status, the members of the Vanniyar caste use titles such as Padayatchi, Gounder, Naicker/Nayagar, Kander/Kandar, Palli in Tamil Nadu, in Karnataka they are called Tigala or Thigilaru with a common suffix of Gowda and Nayakar. In Andhra Pradesh, Vanniars are usually known as Pillai, Agnikula, Kshatriya, Vanne Kapu or Naik. There are 92 different names or sub caste/sub titles given for Vanniya Kula Kshatriyas. This can be seen in the book written by A.K.Natarajan of Vanniyar sangam. The sub caste like Gounder, Naicker, Kandar, Padaiyaachi, Raju, Palli e.t.c.

Vanniyars live in an area where three South Indian states intersects. They currently predominate in northern Tamil Nadu)whereas sizable numbers are found in southern Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. In these latter Indian states they are in sizeable mass primarily due to migration of other sects from outside and vice versa.
In terms of population they are the most populated community in Tamil Nadu (Both as Vanniars) and Pondichery.

Important cities are Chennai,Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Bangalore, Kolar, Salem, Thiruchirapalli, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Vellore, Cuddalore, Virudhachalam, Thiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Villupuram, Tindivanam, Gingee, Nellore, Thirupathi, Jayankondam, Pondicherry,Mayiladuthurai,Vedaranyam ,Ariyalur and Nagapattinam.

[edit] Vanniyar in Sri Lanka

Main article: Vanniar (Sri Lanka)
Vanniar or Vannia is a title of a feudal chief in medieval Sri Lanka who ruled as a tribute payer to any number of local kingdoms. It was also recored as that of a name of a caste amongst Sri Lankan Tamils iin the Vanni District of northern Sri Lanka during the early 1900’s. It is no longer used as a name of a caste or as chiefs in Sri Lanka. There are number of origin theories for the feudal chiefs as well as the caste as coming from modern Tamil Nadu state or as an indigenous formation. (see Pandara Vannian)

Vanniyar also migrated to South Africa, Malaysia, Singapore, Seychelles, Mauritius and Fiji as part of the great Tamil diaspora. Variant Vanniyar titles such as Govendar, Naicker and Padayachee are used amongst their descendants.

The Vanniyars may be linked in tradition to the vanni tree (prosopis spicigera), a holy tree in Hindu tradition.Kulasekhara,one of the early travancore kings,and one of the most renowned alwars reverenced by the srivaishnava community belongs to them.Vanniyars celebrate his anniversary in Parthasarathy temple Chennai even now.The Vanniyars have the right to present the most important camphor offering of the Mylapore Kapaleeswarar Temple.The Ekambaranathar Temple at Kanchipuram built by them.Likewise the Chidambaram Nataraja Temple is founded by Swetavarman,a Pallava king.

      There are four varnas - Brahmin, Ksatriyas, Vaisyas and Sudras. We identify "varnas" with "jatis". In point of fact, varna and jati are not the same. The varnas are only the four mentioned above, that is Brahmins, Ksatriyas, Vaisyas and Sudras. Within each there are many jatis. Among Brahmins there are Ayyars, Ayyangars, Raos, and so on.     Mudaliar - This is really uncalled everybody has pride in their community and your irresponsible post will create un desired hatred among the vanniyars on the people with mudaliar title don’t use common title as mudaliar what mudaliar are you Vellala?     Generally mudaliar are sensible and peace loving people and won’t indulge on nonsense work like this, we are in the Morden era people go up to moon and mars and people like you want to go backwards fight wars ride on horses and elephants slave fellow human beings,
    This could also because of some Vanniyar writers who target the vellala group on varna sasthra and claim all the kinghood this is really misleading the common man of his community each one of them think that he is a king and want rule all over, Instead these writers could deploy their educational ability in teaching their caste men and bring them up in the society in terms of socio economic status see the nadars once termed as shannars and their present socio economic status, every caste in Tamilnadu should learn a lesson from them.

    All vanniyar regions in tamilnadu has been made below povery areas by both AIADMK AND DMK governments. Vanniyars in Dharmapuri realised it and voted for PMK. LIke wise ALL VANNIYAR LIVING IN OTHER PARTS OF TAMILNADU SHOULD VOTE FOR PMK. In SALEM DISTRICT , VILUPURAM DISTRICT 90 % PEOPLE ARE VANNIYAR.       Mr. Mohan Raj... I think you don't know tamil history properly. Tamil caste system is different from north indian caste system. After the influence of brahminism only varna system came into tamil nadu. Originally Tamil lands were divided into five regions and people were categorised based on their occupations and there was no untouchability.
      Let me ask you a simple question based on your comment. Can you please tell me the tamil ksatriyas in the Varna system ??? i bet you wont find any tamil caste under kshatriyas in varna system. Does this mean there were no kings or warriors in tamil nadu? this doesnt make sense right? like i said this north indian varna system was penetrated in tamil nadu just before few centuries and brahman community which wanted to show dominance over others have added all other tamil castes under shudras. Please read the tamil culture in depth and comment.

      ofcourse there are reference available in the form of inscriptions in tamil country about khystria it would be totally contradictory for example

      who are Khystria as per manu, the வேந்தர்கள் or the rulers of a big geography , சிற்றரசர் territorial rulers ஏனாதி(commanders) கவிதி
      (minister) are termed as khystria, i can show you mudaliar and pillai (
      வேளாண் குடி) as rulers, ministers and commanders for instance the epic hero Karunakara thondaiman who won the kalinga war is mentioned as vellan (வேளாண்) and kambar praises him as pallava kula thondral, in the 15th century there existed a small kingdom known as Gatti dynasty who ruled from tharamangalam are called the gatti Mudaliars they were refereed as vellalar in the inscription

      கிருஷ்ணகிரி மாவட்டம் கிருஷ்ணகிரி வட்டம் சந்தூர் எனும் ஊரில் வட்டெழுத்து பொறிப்பு பெற்ற நடுகல் கல்வெட்டு உள்ளது. (கிரு. மா. கல். 71/2005)
      ஸ்வஸ்தி ஸ்ரீ கட்டானை பருமற்கி யாண்டு நாற்பத்தைந்தாவது பெரும் / பாணிளவரைசர் வேளால நாடாள பெருமுகை கலியட / க்கியார் சேவகன் கட்டிய விச்சன் / புலிக் குத்திப் பட்டான்

      Kodumbalur Vellar is mentinoned in the inscription as "சத்திரிய சிங்க முக வேளார்" about 80 percent of the commanders from chola army are from vellan kudi only to quote Manavil Kuthan alias Naralakoviran he is been praised as below,

      "வேளாண் குடி முதல்வன் தொண்டைர்கோன்"

      so it would be meaningless to call pillai mudaliar (vellan kudi) as sudra since they were holding high offices from historical past.

      Every caste in tamilnadu had their fame so better stop calling names otherwise this would lead to retaliation which is already happening few irresponsible fanatic are making it worst.

    who is palli? palli means what?
    1.The Answer is king, literally the word palli termed king in Pāli language, which introduced by our ancester pallava king narasimha varman. Vanniyars people can claim Pallava dynasty by solid Evidence.
    2. Is the pallis are slavery of Brahmins?
    Everyone from the Kshatriya clan should be guided by the Brahmins , Like (chatrapati shivaji)
    *And pallis never mentioned in any Stone inscriptions as sudrā.

      It's up-to ur family and theirs but we deserve more dynasty clans than they have.... but today financialy they are little bit higher and we are... its only because our zone AGRI is dry... .Rest we too hold acres of land in our region our family holds 160acres of land and we have 20 yrs of village president postings in Villupuram near pondicherry.       Sema comedy Sir Nenga go and see the history it's a Vanniyar sub caste nayakar which is stolen by Kandi naidus so called telungu nayakars .....in chola period a army head and small rulers under the chola dynasty is also called as nayakars .... So the culprit who came in the 15th century stolen many names to create confusion.... Like wise there are tamil mudhaliyars & tamil nayakars, but stolen why u are not called as nayakars in andhra can anybody explain.

    Even if a royal clan or caste is defeated. They know ways(only in a right way) to develop economically, socially and politically powerful. That is the real kshatriyan spirit. Any royal caste would not accept marriage alliance from other caste. Many historical data are erased but still one can find which clans are great just by their growth and what they are now.

    Mohanraj varna order will never fit into Tamil diaspora in fact manu had exempted the speakers of Dravidian language from kystria, more over during kaliyuga everybody is a Sudra or below sudra,

    "kalou sudra sambavah: “In the Kali-yuga everyone is born as a sudra.

    ofcourse there are reference available in the form of inscriptions in tamil country about khystria it would be totally contradictory for example

    who are Khystria as per manu, the வேந்தர்கள் or the rulers of a big geography , சிற்றரசர் territorial rulers ஏனாதி(commanders) கவிதி
    (minister) are termed as khystria, i can show you mudaliar and pillai (
    வேளாண் குடி) as rulers, ministers and commanders for instance the epic hero Karunakara thondaiman who won the kalinga war is mentioned as vellan (வேளாண்) and kambar praises him as pallava kula thondral, in the 15th century there existed a small kingdom known as Gatti dynasty who ruled from tharamangalam are called the gatti Mudaliars they were refereed as vellalar in the inscription

    we also come across through a hero stone there existed a vellala nadu

    கிருஷ்ணகிரி மாவட்டம் கிருஷ்ணகிரி வட்டம் சந்தூர் எனும் ஊரில் வட்டெழுத்து பொறிப்பு பெற்ற நடுகல் கல்வெட்டு உள்ளது. (கிரு. மா. கல். 71/2005)
    ஸ்வஸ்தி ஸ்ரீ கட்டானை பருமற்கி யாண்டு நாற்பத்தைந்தாவது பெரும் / பாணிளவரைசர் வேளால நாடாள பெருமுகை கலியட / க்கியார் சேவகன் கட்டிய விச்சன் / புலிக் குத்திப் பட்டான்

    Kodumbalur Vellar is mentinoned in the inscription as "சத்திரிய சிங்க முக வேளார்" about 80 percent of the commanders from chola army are from vellan kudi only to quote Manavil Kuthan alias Naralakoviran he is been praised as below,

    "வேளாண் குடி முதல்வன் தொண்டைர்கோன்"

    so it would be meaningless to call pillai mudaliar (vellan kudi) as sudra since they were holding high offices from historical past.

    Every caste in tamilnadu had their fame so better stop calling names otherwise this would lead to retaliation which is already happening few irresponsible fanatic are making it worst.
